Welcome Tri!

Over the past few months, we really cannot stress enough how beneficial it has been for us to be in the Rosenman Institute. Through this collaboration, we have again been successful in applying to a UC Berkeley HAAS School of Business Program, that matches Masters of Business Administration (MBA) students with start-ups to provide a whole range of business support.

This month, we were very pleased to welcome Tri Luong to the Cenofex Innovations team. We've already been impressed with his valuable contributions to the refinement of our business strategy, and are very much looking forward to continue working with Tri over the upcoming months. He brings great business experience to our team, and is a delightful person to work with!

Welcome Tri!

Getting a legal head-start

This month, we are again grateful for our affiliation with the Rosenman Institute. Through this connection, Cenofex Innovations applied for, and were successful in gaining acceptance in the University of California Hastings Startup Legal Garage. The Startup Legal Garage is a selective program in which law students provide corporate and intellectual property work to early stage startup companies under the supervision of leading attorneys throughout the Bay Area. For biotechnology companies such as Cenofex Innovations, the students work closely with a leading attorney to conduct a ‘freedom to operate’ (FTO) search based on the start-up’s technology. An FTO search, though vital, is usually cost prohibitive for start-up companies. Acceptance into the program, means the expenses associated with the search are not incurred by Cenofex Innovations. The FTO search will enable us to position our technology claims in the strongest way possible, substantially increasing the strength of our patent applications.

We were very pleased to work with Mark Oda and Jeff Gourgon from the UC Hastings Startup Legal Garage program, as well as Joe Synder from Kilpatrick Townsend Stockton, who has been a great legal partner. The outcomes of FTO search produced by the legal team are thorough and of excellent quality, and will be essential for our upcoming design phases and patent filings.

Building connections, leveraging innovations

A great part of the Cenofex Innovations journey has been meeting with new and interesting people, every month.

This month we were pleased to have the opportunity to meet Elpis Barons from Trajan Scientific and Medical. Of particular interest to us, is the Trajan accelerator group, which provides programs that "support and grow organisations for the medical, scientific and medical technologies marketplaces". They are an Australian accelerator who really have their finger on the pulse when it comes to leveraging Australia's National Innovation and Science Agenda. Funded and driven primarily by the Australian government, this agenda is committed to embracing new ideas in innovation and science through funding and policy reforms. Australian accelerators such as Trajan, will emerge as key partners for start-ups such as ourselves, looking to leverage this agenda.

We really enjoyed connecting with Elpis and Trajan, and we hope to be able to continue to develop this relationship, as Cenofex Innovations grows.

Welcome Jacob!

Okay, I'm kidding about the photo. We'll replace with one of us and Jacob ;-) Haha - I was going to say... we became a whole lot more preachy

A significant advantage of being in the Rosenman Institute are the connections that the it provides to programs that can support our work. Through the Rosenman Institute, Cenofex Innovations applied for, and were successful in gaining acceptance into the UC Berkeley Masters of Engineering Capstone Program. This program links selected industry partners with UC Berkeley Masters of Engineering students who undertake projects that develop a solution that meets an industry, market or social need. The solution may require the use of a new technology, or a new application of an existing technology. In the case of an industry partner project such as ours, the MEng students work directly with industry on a problem defined by the industry partner.

We were delighted to welcome Jacob Ruprecht as our capstone project intern this month. Jacob boasts an impressive resume, including a Bachelor of Science, Biomedical Engineering from Duke University, and experience in the mechanical testing of synthetic tissues. The focus of Jacob’s capstone project involves the development the lymphoedema fluid flow model required for laboratory testing of our devices.

Impressive qualifications aside, Jacob has been an absolute pleasure to work with, and has already contributed significantly in the research and development laboratory here at Cenofex Innovation.

Welcome Jacob!

August and everything

After the supplier lessons of June/July, we are very pleased in August to finally have our proof of concept device pieced together and ready for optimisation! Although we can't share the details of our technology yet (watch this space!), we can say that the initial tests look promising, which is great for now! We are trying something new, so this proof of concept stage will be full of highs and lows. With that in mind, we're very excited about the potential of this technology to address the unique needs of lymphoedema patients, and look forward to bringing it to market.

This month we were also delighted to meet Rajan Patel, the CEO of iO Lifescience, a spinout of LUNAR. As an industrial design firm, iO Lifescience connects strategy, design, and engineering to develop innovative healthcare devices. We were pleased to be able to discuss how we developed our technology with the user in the forefront - rather than attempting to fit a discovery to a market. This allowed us to be as creative as possible while solving a problem with very specific design requirements. As evidenced in our meetings so far, iO Lifescience brings a wealth of industrial design knowledge to the table, and we are looking forward building a relationship with them as our product develops.

As always, thanks for joining us on our journey!

Cheers,
Sheridan and Michael
